Společnost Intel oznámila sloučení aktivit v oblasti komunikací do jediné organizace: Intel Communications Group (ICG).
Snahy společnosti Intel v oblasti komunikací – vytvořit komunikační infrastrukturu pro segment mobilních telefonů a kapesních počítačů – byly rozděleny mezi organizace ICG a Wireless Communications and Computing Group (WCCG). V čele nové divize bude stát Sean Maloney, výkonný viceprezident společnosti Intel a generální ředitel ICG.
Společnost Intel dále oznámila, že Ron Smith, senior viceprezident společnosti Intel a generální ředitel Intel WCCG, odchází počátkem příštího roku do důchodu.
„Prostřednictvím našich produktů budeme i nadále plně podporovat konvergenci výpočetních a komunikačních technologií, přičemž jako nejaktuálnější vidíme sbližování lokálních bezdrátových sítí a mobilních technologií,“ řekl Craig Barrett, CEO společnosti Intel. „Díky konsolidaci zpřesníme v této strategicky významné oblasti plánování nových produktů a prohloubíme kontakty se zákazníky.“

ICG will assume WCCG`s product portfolio in addition to its current focus on network processors, wireless LAN chipsets, gigabit networking solutions, network cards and related infrastructure technologies. WCCG products include processors based on Intel® XScale technology along with chipsets, reference designs, software and other technologies built around the Intel® Personal Internet Client Architecture (Intel® PCA). Products also include Intel`s flash memory business and digital signal processing activities.
Smith, 53, is a 26-year veteran of the company. He led Intel`s movement into CMOS with development of the process for manufacturing Intel`s 80386 processor. Smith went on to lead Intel`s embedded processor and PCI components divisions. More
recently, as general manager of WCCG he led Intel`s efforts in flash memory and processors based on Intel XScale technology for the cellular and handheld computing market segments.
"Ron has played an instrumental role at this company and had many successes in a number of diverse areas over the years," Barrett said. "He`s been a key contributor to our success, and he will be missed. We wish Ron well in his retirement."
